Google has released Android 16, marking the first update under its revised annual release schedule. Instead of the traditional fall launch coinciding with new Pixel phones, Google now plans a major Android release in late spring, followed by a smaller update at the end of the year.

Despite the increased screen size of foldable devices like the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Google confirmed to Ars Technica that foldables and phones will not support on-device windowing like tablets. Instead, they will offer only a connected display option for the desktop interface. Support for this feature will depend on device manufacturers, with Google’s own phones supporting windowing but some Android 16 devices limited to standard display mirroring for external screens.

While Android 16 does not introduce many headline features, it lays the groundwork for more significant enhancements planned throughout 2025.

Alongside Android 16, Google announced a new Pixel Drop update for Pixel devices. This update includes Expressive Captions expanding to the UK, Australia, and Canada, improved hearing aid support, and live search functionality in the magnifier app.

The most notable Pixel Drop feature is Pixel VIPs, an upgraded version of favorite contacts. VIP contacts appear in a home screen widget and a new interface showing recent messages (from Messages and WhatsApp), personal details like birthdays, and shared locations. VIPs can also bypass Do Not Disturb settings in Messages and WhatsApp. These features will be exclusive to Pixels running Android 16.
