Apple will allow video playback on CarPlay with the upcoming iOS 26 update. Users will be able to stream videos from their iPhones to their vehicle’s center display via AirPlay, but only when the car is parked, according to Apple.
This feature was first highlighted by MacRumors and appears under the “video in the car” section on Apple’s developer site. It sits alongside other categories like automaker apps and car keys. Apple is inviting automakers and developers interested in supporting CarPlay, CarPlay Ultra, AirPlay video, or car keys to join its MFi Program.
However, this functionality requires automakers to implement support for CarPlay with AirPlay video, meaning it will not be immediately available in all vehicles. Many automakers remain cautious about new technologies that could distract drivers and want guarantees that video playback is restricted to when vehicles are stationary. They also hesitate to cede too much control of their infotainment displays to Apple. Aston Martin is currently the only automaker endorsing Apple’s new CarPlay Ultra platform.
Apple has not provided details about hardware requirements or which manufacturers will support the feature.
Currently, numerous vehicles, especially electric models, provide video streaming or gaming options while parked. Some manufacturers using Android-based systems have built-in apps like YouTube, while Tesla offers a Theater mode with access to Netflix, Hulu, and others. Other brands provide video streaming via passenger or seatback screens.
Previously, users have accessed video on CarPlay through unofficial methods such as third-party adapters or jailbreak tweaks.
