Apple Wallet Ad for F1 Movie Draws User Backlash

Apple iPhone users are expressing frustration after receiving an unsolicited push notification from the Apple Wallet app promoting the tech giant’s original film, “F1 the Movie.” The notification offered a $10 discount at Fandango for purchasing two or more tickets to the film.

The movie, starring Brad Pitt, delves into the world of Formula 1 racing and was filmed during actual Grand Prix events. It highlights Apple technology, including custom-made cameras assembled from iPhone parts and AirPods Max featured in the film.

Despite the film’s positive reception, many users are unhappy with receiving marketing messages through a core utility like the Wallet app. On social media, some have voiced their displeasure, with one Reddit user stating, “I did not pay over $1000 for an iPhone to get advertised at.” Others sought advice on disabling Apple Pay advertisements.

Currently, only the iOS 26 beta includes an option to disable “Offers & Promotions” in Apple Wallet. Users on the stable release can only turn off notifications or hide card benefits during checkout but cannot opt out of marketing offers entirely.

This upcoming control toggle implies Apple intends to increase Wallet-based promotional messaging, a move likely to meet resistance from users. Historically, Apple customers have shown aversion to unsolicited ads on their devices, as seen with earlier controversies such as ads within iOS Settings and the automatic addition of a U2 album to users’ iTunes libraries.

Apple has heavily promoted “F1 the Movie,” collaborating with Warner Bros. The promotion included launching a haptic trailer that offers vibration feedback and featuring film content during the WWDC 2025 keynote, with Apple executives participating in a racing segment.

Apple did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
