Blizzard has announced it will stop developing new content for its mobile tower defense game, Warcraft Rumble, following layoffs linked to Microsoft’s broader workforce reduction of around 9,000 employees.
According to reports, approximately 100 Blizzard developers were affected, leading the studio to scale back on Warcraft Rumble. Blizzard stated the game will continue to receive regular in-game event updates and bug fixes but no new features or content.
The company acknowledged that Warcraft Rumble struggled to meet expectations for long-term success despite efforts to incorporate player feedback. Launched in 2023 after nearly a decade of development, it was the first mobile game set in the Warcraft universe.
Warcraft Rumble was one of two mobile projects Blizzard had been developing; the other, an unannounced Pokémon Go-style game, was cancelled in 2022.
This move places Warcraft Rumble alongside other Blizzard titles like Starcraft II and Heroes of the Storm, which are also in development limbo.
Separately, Xbox announced it is cancelling the Rare-developed Everwild and the Perfect Dark remake, while shutting down The Initiative, the studio behind the latter.
