Bungie has confirmed an indefinite delay for its upcoming shooter, Marathon, previously set for release on September 23, 2025. The studio has yet to provide a new release window, saying only that an updated date will be announced this fall.

In its announcement, Bungie cited player feedback from the game’s reveal and Closed Alpha playtest as a key reason for the delay. The development team aims to refine the game to better meet community expectations.

“Thank you for your passionate feedback and patience,” Bungie said. “We know we need more time to craft Marathon into a game that truly reflects your passion. After extensive discussions, we’ve decided to delay the September 23rd release.”

The delay was anticipated following mixed reactions to the Closed Alpha. Compounding challenges include an ongoing audit for alleged stolen art assets after a former employee was accused of incorporating unauthorized artwork into the game.

Bungie did not specify changes planned during the delay but mentioned improvements such as proximity chat, enhanced experiences for solo and duo players, increased visual fidelity, and a darker tone reminiscent of the original Marathon series. The core gameplay—a class-based hero shooter with permanent loot loss—remains unchanged.

Sony recently indicated Marathon would release fiscal year 2025 (before March 2026), but Bungie has refrained from confirming this, providing no concrete timeline. Planned marketing and a major open beta have also been postponed, replaced by undisclosed closed playtests.

The game’s delay raises questions about its future success as it plays a central role in Sony’s near-term live service plans. While the extra development time may help, the lack of a firm date and ongoing concerns suggest significant hurdles remain.

Bungie assures players there will be more playtests but cautions that further news will only arrive later this fall.
