Capcom first revealed Pragmata, a sci-fi action game, in 2020 during a PlayStation State of Play event. Since then, the game’s release has been postponed multiple times, with few updates from the company. Despite skepticism surrounding its final quality, Capcom confirmed Pragmata is set to launch in 2026.

At the 2025 Summer Game Fest (SGF), Polygon had 20 minutes of hands-on experience with the game, which left a strong positive impression. The demo showcased a third-person shooter centered on combat, offering a fresh approach compared to the common titles at SGF.

Players take on the role of Hugh, a space explorer, who teams up with Diana, a small android, aboard a lunar research station infested with hostile AI robots. Soon after meeting, they face attacks from robotic enemies armed with lasers.

Combat involves a unique cooperation between Hugh and Diana: Hugh’s bullets are ineffective alone, so Diana uses hacking to disable the robots. Players initiate hacks through a block puzzle mechanic, which can stun enemies briefly or provide more time if solved thoroughly. Once disabled, Hugh can attack or reposition strategically.

This two-step combat system creates tactical encounters rather than frantic action. Enemies move slowly but attack in waves, forcing players to balance puzzle-solving and shooting. The interface is minimal and intuitive, displaying hacking progress and incoming threats clearly.

The demo is set mainly within the detailed lunar base, highlighting PlayStation 5’s graphical capabilities. Movement includes running, jumping, and a jetpack that felt smooth and well-integrated, offering versatile navigation and combat options. Additional tools like an electric net gun give players ways to control enemies and enhance hacking opportunities.

While the narrative hints at a larger story involving past events at the station and a potential journey to Earth, the demo focused on the polished gameplay experience. Pragmata blends combat, puzzles, and exploration in a refined package.

Capcom’s lengthy development process and delayed release have left many uncertain about the game’s future, but the SGF demo suggests Pragmata could be a standout original IP for the PlayStation 5 generation.

Pragmata is scheduled for release in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
