Apple Original Films’ sixth wide theatrical release, F1, starring Brad Pitt, is generating strong box office anticipation with U.S. and Canada presales surpassing those of recent Pitt films like Bullet Train and Gladiator 2. The film benefits from an 88% Rotten Tomatoes rating and is positioned for a $40 million to $50 million opening weekend across 3,800 North American theaters.
Internationally, F1 is set to open in 78 markets, including key regions like France, Italy, the UK, Korea, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, China, and Japan. Given the global popularity of Formula One racing, the film aims to generate over $75 million overseas, contributing to a projected $115 million global debut for the $200 million production directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick).
Warner Bros. is partnering closely with Apple Original Films on distribution and marketing, reportedly sharing 50% of the prints and advertising costs. The film holds exclusive IMAX screenings for three weeks and is also available in Dolby Cinema, premium large formats, motion seats, drive-ins, and dine-ins.
Historically, racing movies have had mixed commercial success. Universal’s Rush (2013) earned $26.9 million domestically, while Ford v. Ferrari (2019) performed better with a $31.4 million opening and multiple Oscar nominations. Classic titles like Days of Thunder (1990) and Six Pack (1982) also had moderate box office returns.
F1 distinguishes itself as a high-energy, visually spectacular film expected to draw a broad audience, particularly men over 25, who show strong interest based on early tracking and presales.
Meanwhile, Universal Pictures will release M3GAN 2.0, the PG-13 sequel to the 2022 hit horror film, in over 3,000 North American theaters. Opening weekend projections are near $20 million, though presales trail behind comparable horror releases. The sequel’s marketing highlights the return of original creators Gerard Johnstone and features an international rollout spanning 79 markets, including the UK, Ireland, Mexico, and Brazil. Early previews begin Thursday afternoon.
