The Framework Laptop 12 presents a refined design, but it misses key features like a keyboard backlight and biometric authentication options found on the Laptop 13 model. Without a fingerprint sensor or an IR webcam, users must rely on a PIN or password for Windows Hello access, which is unexpected at this price point.
On the hardware side, Framework continues to prioritize repairability and upgrades. The included Torx screwdriver allows easy access by removing eight captive screws to lift off the keyboard and trackpad assembly, revealing components such as the RAM, SSD, battery, and motherboard.
The Laptop 12’s motherboard is notably smaller and non-interchangeable with the Laptop 13’s. This reduction impacts expandability: the Laptop 12 supports a single DDR5 RAM slot with a maximum capacity of 48GB and uses shorter M.2 2230 SSDs, similar to those used in Microsoft Surface devices and the Steam Deck. Although these SSDs have become easier to find, they are generally more expensive and offer fewer choices than the common M.2 2280 drives.
