Google is testing Search Live, a feature that enables real-time voice conversations with its AI chatbot directly within the search engine. Currently available to Labs users in the US, Search Live lets users engage in back-and-forth voice interactions using Google’s customized Gemini AI.
The feature is accessible through the Google app on Android and iOS, allowing users to ask questions aloud and receive audio responses. While camera-sharing support is not yet available, Google plans to add this functionality in the coming months, enabling users to point their camera at objects and ask related questions.
Search Live integrates web search results during conversations, providing relevant links alongside AI responses. Users can try it by opting into the AI Mode experiment in Google Labs and tapping the new “Live” icon in the app. The AI maintains context throughout the conversation, allowing follow-up questions on related topics.
This development follows Google’s broader efforts to enhance its search experience, including introducing podcast-style Audio Overviews. Other AI companies, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, have also launched voice modes for their models, while Apple has delayed its own voice-integrated AI assistant feature due to reliability concerns.
Search Live operates in the background, enabling continuous conversations even when users switch between apps. It also offers a transcript view for reading responses and supports typed replies. Past interactions are saved in users’ AI Mode history for reference.
