Google has introduced a new AI feature in Sheets that uses Gemini AI to generate text within spreadsheets. This function can reference specific cells to create content, summarize data, or categorize information.
For example, users can generate tailored advertisement copy for various target audiences by selecting the relevant cells and applying the AI function. The feature can also summarize customer feedback and classify inquiries as compliments, exchange requests, or return requests. Additionally, it can categorize restaurants by location. Google provides several examples on its support page.
This capability expands on a previous Gemini-powered Sheets feature that answers questions about data and creates visualizations. However, the new AI function currently supports only text-based responses and cannot access entire spreadsheets or files on Google Drive. It also limits output generation to the first 200 selected cells, requiring users to process additional cells sequentially.
The AI function is available to Google Workspace users on business and enterprise plans, Gemini AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, and those with the Gemini Education plan or add-on.
