Google Maps Enhances Navigation with Gemini AI Integration

Google has introduced a new update to Maps that integrates its AI model Gemini, available now on Android and iOS.

The update includes landmark-based navigation, allowing users to receive directions using local landmarks such as gas stations and restaurants instead of just distances or traffic signs. For example, Maps might instruct you to “turn right at the gas station ahead,” making navigation more intuitive.

Gemini also provides proactive traffic alerts about jams, accidents, or other travel disruptions. These notifications can appear even when users are not actively navigating, helping them plan ahead.

Additionally, Gemini powers Google Lens integration within Maps. Users can use Lens to identify establishments in real-time, ask questions about them, or find specific features such as available menu items. The AI can respond via voice or text, enhancing on-the-spot information.

For more complex searches, Gemini can handle multi-step queries—such as finding budget-friendly restaurants with vegan options—and guide users directly to their chosen destinations. Users can also allow Gemini access to their Google Calendar, enabling the AI to suggest and add events seamlessly.

These features are gradually rolling out in the U.S. later this month for both Android and iOS. Gemini-powered navigation and Lens integration will be available in the coming weeks, with Android Auto support expected soon.
