Google Phone App Introduces Material 3 Expressive Redesign with New Call Answering Gestures

Google is rolling out a comprehensive Material 3 Expressive redesign for its Phone app, currently appearing in the beta channel alongside a new option to answer calls via horizontal swipe or single tap.

The bottom navigation bar remains unchanged with four tabs, although its background is now darker. The “Search contacts” feature also retains its previous design.

In the Recents tab, calls are displayed in rounded rectangular cards, a style consistent across Favorites and the dialer screen. While the number pad remains the same, its background now features rounded corners.

Call filters—including All, Missed, Contacts, Non-Spam, and Spam—have been updated, replacing outlined buttons with filled designs.

The Settings menu has adopted the Material 3 Expressive style and introduces a new “Incoming call gesture” setting, allowing users to choose between horizontal swipe or single tap to answer. Incoming call screens use a scalloped Material 3 shape and include rotating elements until an action is taken. “Urgent?” and “Message” options appear in pill-shaped containers.

During active calls, action buttons have shifted from circular to pill-shaped, which morph into rounded rectangles when selected. The end call button is now larger and more prominent, designed as a wide pill shape.

This redesign is part of beta version 180 of the Phone app and is being gradually enabled via server-side updates.
