Google to Release Mandatory Update to Address Pixel 6A Battery Overheating Next Week

Google is rolling out a mandatory Android 16 update for Pixel 6A phones starting July 8 to address battery overheating issues on certain devices.

The update targets “Impacted Devices” by reducing battery capacity after 400 charging cycles, a measure intended to lower overheating risks. Users will receive a notification at 375 cycles to prepare for the change, which may lead to shorter battery life between charges.

Google warns that affected phones may experience reduced charging speed and temporary adjustments in battery-level display as the system recalibrates the battery capacity.

The cause of the issue affecting only some Pixel 6A units remains unclear. However, Google offers free battery replacements for eligible users, who can check their status through the company’s support page.

This update follows similar responses to battery problems on previous models: Google provided free replacements or credits for Pixel 4A users experiencing battery issues and currently runs an extended repair program for battery swelling on the Pixel 7A.
