Google will roll out a mandatory Android 16 update for Pixel 6A devices starting July 8 to mitigate battery overheating risks on certain phones.
The update targets “Impacted Devices” and introduces battery management features that reduce battery capacity after 400 charge cycles, according to Google’s Alex Moriconi. This follows reports of Pixel 6A units catching fire.
Users experiencing the issue will receive a notification at 375 charge cycles informing them of the upcoming changes. After activation, the battery may hold less charge and exhibit reduced charging speed. The battery level indicator might also show short-term inaccuracies as the phone adjusts to the revised battery capacity.
Google has not clarified why only some Pixel 6A phones are affected. Eligible users can request a free battery replacement through Google’s support site.
This update follows similar actions taken for other Pixel models, including free battery replacements for Pixel 4A users and an extended repair program addressing battery swelling on the Pixel 7A.
