Google’s Gemini to Replace Google Assistant on Android with Enhanced Privacy Controls

Google is preparing to roll out an update for its AI chatbot Gemini that will enable it to control Android device features and apps while offering improved privacy options. Starting July 7, Gemini users will be able to use functions like phone calls, messaging, and timers without having to enable Gemini Apps Activity.

The Gemini Apps Activity setting currently allows Google to use chatbot conversations to enhance its products and AI models. Disabling this setting previously prevented Gemini from accessing connected apps and performing tasks such as setting alarms or sending WhatsApp messages.

Google clarified that despite the changes, users can still disable Gemini’s app connections at any time. The update aims to allow Gemini to assist with daily tasks without recording data for AI training. According to Google, when Apps Activity is off, user chats are not reviewed or used to improve AI models.

This update paves the way for Gemini to fully replace Google Assistant on Android later this year. Although disabling Apps Activity stops Gemini interactions from appearing in the activity log, conversations will still be stored for up to 72 hours for security purposes.
