After spending several days with the Nintendo Switch 2, it’s clear this console feels like an enhanced version of the original Switch rather than a radical change. The line between console generations continues to blur, and the Switch 2 embodies this trend by offering a bigger, more powerful experience without losing what made the original so popular.
While some features like mouse controls and GameChat still require testing, extensive playtime with titles like Mario Kart World, Cyberpunk 2077, and Street Fighter 6 shows the Switch 2’s improved performance and appeal. Returning to the original Switch after using the Switch 2 may be difficult.
Seamless Game Library Transfer
Nintendo has long struggled with allowing game libraries to transfer between devices. The Switch 2 significantly improves this process. After logging into a Nintendo account, transferring content from an OLED Switch took just 15 minutes, preserving games, online accounts, and settings. This streamlined transition enhances the upgrade experience.
Handling Larger Games
The Switch 2’s hardware boost allows it to run bigger, open-world games more smoothly. Cyberpunk 2077 runs well in handheld and docked modes, though graphics are not on par with high-end PCs or other consoles. Some textures appear blurry on portable mode, but gameplay remains fluid.
File sizes are notable, with Cyberpunk 2077 nearing 60GB, Street Fighter 6 at 49.2GB, and Fortnite at 37.8GB. While smaller than some PS5 games, managing storage will be necessary.
Comfort and Controls
The larger screen and slightly heavier device did not cause discomfort during extended play sessions. A 12-year-old tester also found gameplay comfortable. The Joy-Con controllers remain largely the same functionally but now feature magnetic connectors that feel satisfying to attach. A new prominent button on the back is tactile and encourages casual interaction.
Simplified Screenshot Sharing
Sharing screenshots is easier than before. Instead of scanning QR codes, images can now be uploaded directly to the Switch mobile app with one click, similar to the PS5’s system, facilitating quick sharing.
Enhanced Game Versions
There are few Switch 2 exclusives at launch, but many existing games have been upgraded. Enhanced versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Fortnite offer improved performance and visuals. Notably, No Man’s Sky runs significantly better on the Switch 2 compared to the original hardware, providing a smoother, more immersive portable experience.
The Switch 2 maintains Nintendo’s portable gaming appeal while offering meaningful improvements. It promises to keep players engaged both on the go and at home, making the original Switch feel outdated in comparison.
