After ten years in development, Hypixel Studios has cancelled Hytale, its anticipated Minecraft-like sandbox RPG. The studio announced it is “winding down” operations following the project’s cancellation.

Hytale was conceived in 2015 as a blend of Hypixel’s popular Minecraft mini-games and an original sandbox adventure. The game garnered substantial excitement, aided by millions in investment from Riot Games, which acquired Hypixel Studios in 2020.

In a detailed statement, Hypixel described the decision as “incredibly tough.” The team cited escalating technical challenges, evolving game ambitions, and the difficulty of delivering the promised experience as key reasons for halting development. Despite attempts to reduce scope and secure additional funding, the project could not continue without compromising its vision.

The statement noted that the popular Hypixel Minecraft server is unaffected and will continue to operate independently. With no further financial support from Riot, Hypixel Studios plans to support its 100+ employees with severance and resources as it winds down over the coming months.

“We still believe in Hytale. We believe in the team, and are forever grateful to every member who poured their love into the game,” the statement said. “We’re proud of what we built and will carry those lessons forward into whatever comes next.”

Hypixel thanked its community for their support throughout the project’s development and confirmed that while this chapter is closing, the spirit of Hytale will endure.
