Monster Hunter Wilds Player Count and Reviews Plummet Months After Launch

Monster Hunter Wilds, released by Capcom, has seen a sharp decline in both player numbers and review scores just four months after its launch.

Although the game initially received praise, recent Steam reviews show only 18% positive feedback, classifying it as “Overwhelmingly Negative” and dropping its overall rating to “Mixed.” Concurrent player numbers have also fallen drastically. At launch, the game peaked at 1.38 million concurrent players but now sees around 17,000 daily, amounting to roughly 1.2% of its peak. This is fewer than the player count of the seven-year-old Monster Hunter World, which is widely regarded as having better long-term appeal.

The negative reception primarily focuses on two issues:

  • Poor PC performance, with reported frequent crashes and degraded frame generation, even on high-end systems.
  • A lack of engaging endgame content, with players quickly running out of activities despite new monsters and difficulty adjustments.

Capcom’s earlier update briefly boosted player numbers but failed to sustain interest. The upcoming second title update, scheduled for later this month, is expected to address these problems, though skepticism remains about its potential impact.

As a franchise known for long-term player engagement through grinding and content exploration, the rapid drop in player count indicates significant dissatisfaction. Capcom faces mounting pressure to improve performance and expand endgame content to retain its community.
