Nexus Mods will require age verification for adult content to comply with new UK and EU regulations. The platform, based in the UK, must adhere to the Online Safety Act and the EU’s Digital Services Act, which demand removal of illegal content and restrict access to adult material for users under 18.
The company will implement ID verification for UK and EU users to continue offering adult mods. Users outside these regions will not be affected and will still see the simple 18+ confirmation pop-up.
Founder Darkone clarified in the comments that this change is not linked to the recent change in ownership. Instead, it is a legal requirement to avoid removing adult content entirely in these areas.
Nexus Mods is also updating its Terms of Service to better define permissible uploads. The site will introduce automated detection of Child Sexual Abuse Material using technology provided by the Internet Watch Foundation, aligning with notifications required by the National Crime Agency.
Additionally, Nexus Mods will improve its content categorization and tagging system. Instead of a single adult content label, new tags will include:
- Pornographic
- Extreme Violence
- Harmful Substances
- Suicide
- Self-harm
- Depression
- Body Stigma
- Eating Disorders
- Swearing or Profanity
- Sexualised
Users will be able to customize their profile to filter content based on these categories, making the site more user-friendly and adaptable to individual preferences.
