Nexus Mods Ownership Changes After 24 Years Amid Health Concerns

Nexus Mods, the largest PC video game modding platform with over 716,500 mods for 3,768 games, has new ownership after 24 years under its founder, Dark0ne.

In a recent blog post, Dark0ne announced his departure, citing stress-related health issues as the reason. He acknowledged burnout affecting both himself and the site’s staff, stating that fresh leadership was needed to guide Nexus Mods forward.

Dark0ne assured users that the platform’s operations would remain largely unchanged. He introduced new owners Victor, Marinus, and Nikolai, who will take over management. However, the announcement linked only to their Nexus Mods profiles, without disclosing their prior business experience.

Community members investigated further, uncovering that the new owners are connected to Chosen, a growth-focused gaming company based in Denmark. LinkedIn profiles reveal the trio work there, with Marinus Elgaard noting involvement in building “meaningful, sustainable experiences” at Chosen.

The discovery has raised concerns among Nexus Mods users due to Chosen’s emphasis on growth and monetization strategies. Victor Folmann of Chosen has publicly supported in-app purchases and sponsorship models, and a monetization cheat sheet linked to his posts mentioned a play-to-earn approach. Users feared this could threaten Nexus Mods’ culture, particularly around NFTs or cryptocurrency, but Victor has denied plans to introduce such elements.

Also noteworthy is Nikolaj Nyholm, a founder and investor at Chosen. Nyholm is known for his role on the Danish “Dragon’s Den” and as founder of esports team Astralis, which is currently seeking buyers and investors.

The changes have sparked unease about the future direction of Nexus Mods. While Dark0ne’s departure aims to revitalize the platform, the community remains wary of potential shifts driven by the new owners’ growth-focused background. The responsibility now lies with Chosen to maintain Nexus Mods’ legacy as a trusted hub for the gaming modding community.
