Apple is expanding the functionality of Apple Wallet beyond boarding passes to include digital driver’s licenses for identity verification and airport security. Currently, only a select group of states allow residents to add their driver’s licenses to Apple Wallet, enabling faster TSA checkpoint processing.

As digital ID adoption grows, here are the states and territories that support driver’s licenses within Apple Wallet:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Iowa
  • Maryland
  • New Mexico
  • Ohio
  • Puerto Rico

While other states like Louisiana, New York, Utah, and Virginia have mobile driver’s license programs, they require separate apps rather than Apple Wallet integration. TSA currently accepts digital IDs across various platforms including Apple Wallet in about 15 states.

Adding your driver’s license to Apple Wallet:

  • Open the Apple Wallet app and tap the Add button.
  • Select Driver’s License or ID and choose your state.
  • Opt to add it to your iPhone only or also to your Apple Watch.
  • Scan your physical license in a well-lit area and ensure the image is clear.
  • Verify your identity by taking a selfie and following prompts (including facial or head movements).
  • Complete the process using Face ID or Touch ID to link biometrics to your digital ID.

If you switch iPhones, you can transfer your digital ID during device setup via the Wallet app.

Later this year, Apple plans to introduce digital passports in Apple Wallet with the release of iOS 26. This feature will allow users to add a digital version of their physical passports for domestic travel verification at over 250 TSA checkpoints. However, it won’t replace physical passports and cannot be used internationally.

Apple also announced a “Verify with Wallet” feature to simplify age verification when ordering age-restricted items like alcohol for delivery, supported by services including Chime, Turo, Uber Eats, and U.S. Bank.
