Some Nintendo Switch 2 owners have encountered error code 2134-4508, resulting in permanent bans from all online services. The ban targets consoles that have used a Mig cartridge—a microSD-equipped Switch cartridge that can store multiple game copies.
The Mig cartridge allows users to load games by downloading files from others or dumping their own game data using tools like the Mig Dumper. Nintendo considers both pirated and self-dumped game copies a violation of its user agreements.
Manufacturers of the Mig cartridge have stated the device is intended only for backing up personal game copies and requires using self-dumped backups with proper certificates to maintain warranty and online functionality. Despite this, most users employ the cartridge to play pirated games.
Unlike fully bricking devices, Nintendo’s ban disables online access but does not immediately prevent offline play. A YouTube creator known as Scattered Brain documented a banned Switch 2 unable to access the eShop or unlink accounts online. However, virtual game cards linked to the Nintendo account could be transferred to another device, indicating the ban is hardware-specific.
Performing a factory reset on the banned console effectively bricked it by disallowing Nintendo Account sign-in—a measure Nintendo reserves the right to enforce under its updated user agreement and privacy policy.
Nintendo has a history of strict enforcement against piracy and emulator development. With the Switch 2 becoming the fastest-selling console ever, the company is intensifying efforts to ensure compliance with its rules.
