Peak Design Pro Tripod Review: Enhanced Strength and Height with Thoughtful Upgrades

Peak Design has launched a new line of video tripods—the Pro Lite, Pro, and Pro Tall—building on lessons from their first tripod released over six years ago. Priced at $799, $899, and $999 respectively, all three models share core features but differ in height and weight capacity. Early backers on Kickstarter can save between 23% and 27%.

Made entirely of carbon fiber, these tripods are lightweight yet sturdy. The Pro Lite weighs 3.7 lbs, slightly heavier than Peak Design’s original Travel Tripod but taller by four inches, allowing recording at eye level for users around 6’1″. The Pro and Pro Tall models are heavier and support larger loads, suitable for heavier cinema rigs and sliders.

A key highlight across all models is the redesigned ball head featuring a new quick-release system compatible with Arca-Swiss plates. This system includes a dedicated locking mechanism that enhances camera security and usability compared to the prior model. The ball head allows smooth panning in any direction, although it lacks adjustable friction controls. Tilting requires an optional $149 tilt module, which attaches magnetically and offers versatile vertical filming options. While the tilt accessory improves flexibility, its lack of friction adjustment limits smooth tilts with heavier equipment.

Additional improvements include smoother and easier-to-use leg locks, a sturdier concave center column, a hidden hex tool integrated into the center column, and a more spacious carrying bag. Users can also replace the ball head with a $129 Pro Leveling Base for quicker leveling on uneven ground, particularly useful with different fluid video heads.

During testing, the Pro Lite proved ideal for outdoor photography due to its portability, while the Pro and Pro Tall remained preferred for indoor video work. Although newer camera stabilization techniques have reduced the reliance on video tripods, the new Peak Design tripod lineup effectively addresses the shortcomings of their original model, delivering notable enhancements in strength, height, and usability.
