Philips Hue has introduced an updated version of its Smart Button, designed for controlling its smart lighting system. The new model features a larger size and a price increase, particularly noticeable in the U.S. market where it costs $32.99, up from the previous $29.99. In contrast, prices in the UK and EU remain lower at £19.99 and €21.99 respectively.
The Smart Button operates via Zigbee and allows users to control individual or groups of Hue lights through the Hue app. Users can trigger preset scenes, cycle through lighting options, dim or brighten lights by pressing and holding, and initiate automations — functions unchanged from the prior version.
The updated button’s diameter is 45mm, nearly double the 32mm size of the original. Its design is flatter and more angular, replacing the earlier bulbous shape. Additionally, the new model no longer includes the large plastic wall plate resembling a standard light switch; instead, it is mounted using a small metal magnetic plate. The CR2032 battery remains the power source, with an expected lifespan of two years and improved ease of replacement.
Compatibility requires a Hue Bridge and extends to Matter-supported platforms through the bridge, including Apple HomeKit where it registers as a single-press button.
Since its 2019 debut at $24.99, the Smart Button has been a favored simple control device for Hue lights. A 2023 update expanded control options with scene cycling based on time of day.
While the larger design may enhance usability, the U.S. price increase, especially compared to Europe, raises concerns amid Hue’s reputation as a premium-priced brand. A recent email to U.S. customers indicated prices will rise further from July 1, a move possibly linked to tariffs implemented during the Trump administration. Philips Hue’s parent company, Signify, has been contacted for confirmation and details on affected products.
