Sony Interactive Entertainment has released Climate Station, a free educational app for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2. Developed in partnership with the United Nations Playing for the Planet Alliance, the app is now available on the PlayStation Store.
Dan Bardino, PlayStation Studios senior director of strategic development and operations, described the app as a gateway to understanding climate science through an interactive, visually rich experience. On PS5, users navigate a globe with the DualSense controller, while PS VR2 offers an immersive experience using Sense controllers to manipulate Earth’s data directly.
The app features over 90 minutes of narrated content by climate advocate Laura Tobin, presenting real-world data from NASA, NOAA, and the IPCC. Users can explore three zones: Weather Year (a time-lapse of planetary change), Observations (current climate data), and Projections (possible future scenarios).
Developed with scientists from the University of Reading’s Department of Meteorology, Berkeley Earth, and the Playing for the Planet Alliance, Climate Station transforms complex climate information into interactive visualizations designed to educate and inspire action.
The app suits a range of uses—from personal exploration at home to educational and research settings—offering:
- Interactive climate data visualizations
- Curated multimedia with 34 unique explainers
- A dynamic Dolby Atmos enhanced score based on natural Earth elements
- Immersive VR dioramas illustrating physical climate impacts
Users can select their favorite Earth locations, track climate changes over time, and discover personalized climate stories. Climate Station aims to increase global awareness of environmental challenges through engaging digital experiences.
