Sony Raises PS5 Game Prices in Brazil, Sparking Gamer Backlash

Sony has increased prices for several PlayStation 5 titles on the Brazilian PlayStation Store, prompting frustration among local gamers. The price hikes affect both first-party and third-party games, including older launch titles such as Demon’s Souls.

The company attributed the changes to “challenging market conditions, including fluctuating exchange rates.” For example, the recently released Death Stranding 2: On the Beach rose from R$349.90 (~$63.80) to R$399.90 (~$72.98) shortly after its launch.

Many Brazilian players have noted that third-party games are often cheaper on other platforms like Steam. Combined with already high hardware costs in Brazil, these price increases have intensified dissatisfaction within the community.

Sony Interactive Entertainment stated: “We have updated PlayStation Store prices due to challenging market conditions, including fluctuating currency exchange rates. Pricing varies by region and reflects the current economic environment.”

While PlayStation consoles enjoy global popularity, the PS5 has seen slower sales in Europe due to high prices, and similar trends may arise in South America. Though the U.S. has been largely unaffected by such increases, it previously saw the PS5 Digital Edition retail price rise from $399.99 to $449.99.

This development raises concerns about the future affordability of console gaming in regions experiencing economic pressures.
