Sony has raised prices on numerous titles in the Brazilian PlayStation Store, angering local gamers. The increase applies to both first-party and third-party games and affects even launch titles like Demon’s Souls.
The company attributed the price adjustments to “challenging market conditions, including fluctuating exchange rates.” For example, the recently released Death Stranding 2: On the Beach saw its price rise from R$349.90 (~$63.80) to R$399.90 (~$72.98) within days of launch.
Many players have noted that third-party games are significantly cheaper on platforms like Steam, and Brazil’s already high hardware costs compound gamers’ frustrations. This has led to widespread dissatisfaction within the local community.
“Sony Interactive Entertainment has updated the pricing of PlayStation Store content due to challenging market conditions, including fluctuating currency exchange rates. As a result, Brazil has seen an increase in PS Store games and add-on content. Pricing decisions vary by region and are based on the current economic environment.”
While the PlayStation brand enjoys a global audience, high price points have hindered PS5 adoption in regions such as Europe. Brazil may face a similar slowdown due to these recent hikes. Although the United States has mostly avoided such significant increases, there have been previous rises, such as the PS5 Digital Edition price increase from $399.99 to $449.99.
The impact of tariffs and currency fluctuations remains a concern for future pricing. Brazilian gamers and console users worldwide continue to watch how these market challenges will shape the accessibility of the PS5 and its game library.
