Spotify is reportedly preparing to launch its long-anticipated lossless audio tier for the iPhone. New code referencing lossless audio was discovered in Spotify’s desktop app, web player, and the latest iPhone beta, according to reports from TechCrunch, The Verge, and MacRumors.
Lossless audio preserves all original recording data, offering higher sound quality. The code indicates Spotify’s lossless tier will support 24-bit quality at 44.1 kHz. Users will be able to stream or download lossless tracks through the Spotify iPhone app.
Earlier reports from Bloomberg suggested Spotify plans to introduce a Music Pro subscription that includes high-quality audio, remixing tools, and concert ticket access. This tier could cost an additional $5.99 per month on top of the standard Premium fee, with a possible launch later this year.
Spotify initially announced its “Hi-Fi” lossless audio tier in 2021, the same year Apple Music made lossless audio available to subscribers at no extra cost, up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Spotify’s upcoming offering arrives late and appears to come with an additional fee.
