Square Enix has revealed its reasons for developing its first HD-2D action RPG, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales.

The company initially entered the Nintendo Switch era with the classic RPG Octopath Traveler, followed by the strategy title Triangle Strategy. Now, it is venturing into action RPG territory with this new project.

Tomoya Asano, involved in concept and planning, explained in an interview that the team saw the action RPG genre as a fresh challenge as the HD-2D series evolves.

“We began with a traditional RPG with Octopath Traveler and then created a strategy game with Triangle Strategy. Exploring an action RPG felt like the next natural step. We aim to satisfy fans of our previous titles such as Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler, and Triangle Strategy, while also attracting new players,” Asano said.

The game will feature Elliot as the sole protagonist, with the development team focusing heavily on crafting his character. Clay Tech Works joined the project after working on Bravely Default 2, and the game has been in development for several years.

The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is scheduled for release in 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2. A demo is currently available.
