Square Enix is aware of the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a turn-based RPG that has sold over 3 million copies since its April release and is a strong contender for Game of the Year.
The popularity of Clair Obscur has sparked discussions among fans about the recent direction of the Final Fantasy series, which has increasingly focused on action-based gameplay. Titles like Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Rebirth, and Final Fantasy 15 have moved away from traditional turn-based mechanics that long defined the franchise.
Despite the shift, Square Enix has indicated that its core identity remains rooted in command-based RPGs. During a shareholders meeting, prompted by investor questions referencing Clair Obscur, the company confirmed plans to continue producing turn-based RPGs in the future.
