Unknown Worlds, the studio behind Subnautica, has experienced the sudden exit of its CEO Ted Gill, game director Charlie Cleveland, and technical director Max McGuire. Krafton, the parent company, confirmed these leadership changes are effective immediately.
Steve Papoutsis, CEO of Striking Distance Studios, has been appointed as Unknown Worlds’ new CEO. Krafton stated Papoutsis will oversee the studio’s overall management and creative direction.
The reasons behind the leadership departures remain unclear. Krafton’s announcement indicated an attempt was made to retain the original creators’ involvement in the series. The company extended best wishes to the departing leaders on their future endeavors.
“Krafton is confident that Papoutsis, with decades of experience behind top-rated franchises, will bring renewed energy to delivering the highly anticipated Subnautica 2 to fans,” the statement read.
Subnautica 2 is scheduled for early access release in 2025. Although the leadership changes introduce uncertainty, Krafton affirmed its commitment to delivering the game as expected by players.
“There is nothing more important than the gamer experience,” said Krafton CEO CH Kim. “We are excited about Steve joining us to ensure Subnautica 2 meets player expectations as a complete and satisfying entry in the series.”
Newly appointed Unknown Worlds CEO Papoutsis emphasized that player experience will remain the studio’s “North Star.” Krafton did not provide further details on the departures. Game Developer has reached out to Krafton for additional information.
