Threads Launches Direct Messaging and New Highlight Feature to Stand Apart from Instagram

Threads is introducing its most requested feature: direct messaging (DMs) within the app. This update will allow users to message others without switching to Instagram. The global rollout begins Tuesday and also introduces a new visual element called Highlighter, designed to emphasize perspectives and conversations around trending topics.

At launch, Threads’ DMs support one-on-one chats, preset emoji reactions, spam reporting, and muting messages, similar to Instagram’s features. Group messaging, inbox filters, and advanced controls are planned for future releases. Users cannot block individuals solely on Threads without blocking them on Instagram; control over who can message you depends on whether you follow them.

DMs will be available for users aged 18 and older in most markets except Japan, Australia, the U.K., and the EU. With this addition, Threads looks to compete with text-focused social apps like X and Bluesky, where users engage directly or in groups. Threads does not offer encrypted messaging, emphasizing real-time connections over privacy.

Emily Dalton Smith, Threads VP of Product, explained, “We’re not encrypting our DMs. It’s really about just connecting directly and talking to people about whatever is happening now, which makes encryption less core to the experience.” She also highlighted how Threads is developing a unique interest graph distinct from Instagram’s social graph.

Meta revealed that over a third of daily Threads users have less than 50% overlap between their Instagram and Threads connections, indicating divergent communities. “Instagram is really for creativity, and Threads is really for perspectives,” Smith said.

Meta is testing ways for users to access Threads without an Instagram account, including Facebook login in Europe, Threads-only accounts, and web access without login.

The Threads creator community is growing, with some becoming prominent within the app itself, such as David Rushing, who built an NBA-focused community. The company plans to enhance community discovery by identifying active contributors and recommending users more effectively.

The new Highlighter feature currently spotlights trending topics on users’ For You feeds but may later highlight active conversations and influential voices in topic feeds.

Monetization plans remain focused on advertising, with AI used behind the scenes for content summaries and trending topic headlines. While Meta’s AI chatbot integration, similar to xAI’s Grok, is not currently planned, future AI features are not ruled out.

Threads now has 350 million monthly active users, significantly larger than competitors like Bluesky. However, compared to Meta’s broader portfolio, Threads is still growing and establishing its identity. Earlier DM testing was conducted in select markets including Hong Kong, Thailand, Argentina, and Brazil.
