Microsoft is replacing the familiar blue background of the Windows “Blue Screen of Death” (BSOD) with a black one for the first time in over 40 years.

This update is part of Microsoft’s broader initiative to enhance the resilience of the Windows operating system following last year’s CrowdStrike incident, which caused crashes on millions of Windows machines worldwide.

Microsoft announced that the redesigned error screen, now with a black background, will feature a shorter message and remove the classic frowning face icon. Instead, it will display a restart progress percentage to help users track recovery.

The simplified interface will debut later this summer on Windows 11 version 24H2 devices. Additionally, Microsoft is introducing a “quick machine recovery” feature to automate fixes during widespread outages, minimizing the need for complex manual IT interventions.

This recovery mechanism will also become generally available on Windows 11 this summer, with expanded capabilities planned for later in the year.
