Sources claim Xbox is working on an extensive backwards compatibility overhaul, currently referred to as “Xbox Classics.” The project aims to deliver advanced emulation for original Xbox and Xbox 360 games with improved stability and graphics.
This new platform is expected to provide full integration across multiple devices, including Game Pass, PC, current Xbox consoles, handheld devices like the ROG Xbox Ally, and cloud gaming services.
The rollout is rumored to be split into two major phases in 2026, coinciding with Xbox’s 25th anniversary, though exact dates remain unconfirmed.
Notably, Microsoft is said to be collaborating directly with the developers of the unofficial Xbox 360 Xenia emulator to enhance the emulation experience.
A shortlist of games to receive optimizations includes Fable 2, Skate 3, Gears of War 3, and Batman: Arkham Asylum. These titles are expected to run more smoothly with fewer errors and better frame rates across PC and cloud platforms.
Additional titles under consideration include Def Jam: Fight for New York, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Castle Crashers, Darksiders 2, Prince of Persia (2008), Skate 2, and Left 4 Dead 2.
The goal is not only to revive classic games but to enhance their performance on a variety of hardware, including portable devices and smart TVs.
Furthermore, Xbox plans to support three versions of each game simultaneously: console, PC, and cloud, marking a significant improvement over the current system optimized mainly for Xbox consoles.
While the details remain unconfirmed and should be considered speculative, the report paints a promising picture of a comprehensive backwards compatibility upgrade possibly arriving in 2026.
