Google is testing Doppl, a new app that lets users virtually try on clothes using AI-generated images and videos. By uploading a full-body photo and a screenshot of an outfit from sources like Pinterest or Instagram, Doppl creates images and short clips of the user wearing the selected clothes.
The process requires a clear, well-lit photo without hats and a screenshot of the desired outfit. Doppl first generates a still image, then users can add animations such as waving or making gestures.
In testing, the app produced mixed results. While it accurately rendered some tops, it struggled with pants, often creating distorted or incomplete visuals. For example, it sometimes replaced mismatched socks with AI-generated feet or altered shorts into odd shapes. The app also generated footwear for outfits without shoes shown.
Doppl restricts uploads of certain images, blocking revealing clothing and photos of public figures, adding safeguards against misuse.
Interestingly, Doppl’s AI modified mirror selfies by making users appear thinner with exaggerated proportions, though this did not occur with photos taken by others.
This app expands on Google’s existing virtual try-on feature by allowing a wider range of clothing sources and creating video clips. If improved, Doppl could become a practical tool for envisioning outfits found online.
The Doppl app is currently available for download on Android and iOS.
